I have done this once in my 2013 SLE2 Acadia....but I had to put both front seats all the way up and to drive that way was silly to say the least. So technically it can be done, but I wouldn't do it again...I have the tow package, so I went out and purchased a small 6x10 utility trailer to solve the problem.

The center console shortens space inside the cargo area. One can't put a 4'X8' sheet of anything in there laying flat and still be able to close the hatch (liftgate) - even with the front seats positioned all the way forward.

I am thinking you could drive a short distance with the hatch open, or for longer distances you could tie the hatch partially/mostly closed. Has anyone tried either?

With the hatch open I wounder what would happen if you had to brake hard?

That's not really wise unless you're driving at very slow speeds. Air rushing over the top of the car and/or bumps might unlock the gate from the fully-opened position and cause it to flop or try to close.

What happens if you brake hard?? All depends on whether or not you hit what's in front of you!! :hilarious:

I know its just me being a cranky old man, but y'all are overthinking this way too much. :banghead:

Put the 4 x 8 sheets in, use a ratshit strap from the "D rings" from side to side across the end of the sheet, loop a rope through the handle, close manually and tie under the bumper. This ain't rocket science people, and why drive with your knees in the dash?

You gotta understand that some folks just aren't too resourceful. If they only ever owned velcro-closure shoes, they'd need to be taught how to tie their shoe laces! Makes one wonder why nature allows them to breed.

You are absolutely correct - i've always been a hands on do it yourself-er type and understanding some people's thought processes (or lack there-of) has always been a challenge for me. As I get older I always hoped it was because I had gained experience and learned how to do something, but unfortunately people continually amaze me as I have become more cynical and obnoxious!!

We moved a few years ago into a new up-scale residential community. I have and do my own work on a couple of collector cars, & my neighbor asked me if I thought it would hurt the value of his Porsche if he tried to put aftermarket wiper blades on it. I just told him it was something he better have a dealer do. 2 weeks later he stopped in BRAGGING while at the dealer to have new wiper blades installed, they found a burned out bulb and he only had to pay $340+ for the repairs! Told him he did the right thing. I know the work had to be a couple of hrs labor and probably less than $30 in parts - just not something I would pay for. He also has a nice new toolbox full of nice clean tools - wanna guess who had to use them to remove 2 screws to replace a light bulb in the ceiling fixture?? Good thing is he pays for these little projects with good wine!!

End of my ranting!

Just a couple of pics of stuff I've hauled, with the "inside" of my Acadia!

Looks like mine from time to time! Last week just like you, I laid the blue tarp from Horrible Freight, then 8 bags of fertilizer and then 12 bags of mulch. Easy to clean out and a quick go over with the shop vac and its good as new.

Yup, Love how versatile, and spacious our vehicles are on the inside. Lay a tarp down and you have a cave of storage inside!!!

Stop and think a minute and the answer to this question will be apparent. When you brake, in which direction does the cargo want to shift?

Yes, you are correct. It would like to shift forward.

Then it matters not what the status of the hatch lid is in, or what is going on in back of the load.

The above pictures look like ones I could have taken of the back of my Acadia. Except my Acadia is white and most importantly (one of the reasons I bought the Acadia vs the Enclave) is that it has the SQUARE HATCH OPENING.

That is very important when hauling 4x8 sheets of plywood.

Of course because Acadia has downsized, it probably is no longer up to the job of carrying the ply wood. I may be considering the Enclave for my next vehicle because at my age woodworking with large pieces may no longer be important.
