Owners of 2007, 2008 and early build 2009 Acadias (and any other Lambda model), you should strongly consider preemptively replacing the 3-5-R wave plate in your transmission before it fails and destroys your transmission. This is a $600-700 repair vs. a $3,500+ repair bill if it fails.

Background: The 3-5-R wave plate is a "waved" ring that acts like a flat spring and looks like this:
Image

Most 2007, 2008 and early build 2009 models (not calendar years) were built with a 3-5-R wave plate that was improperly heat treated and more brittle than it should be. This clutch plate gets compressed during shifts and after so many shift cycles is prone to break, like this:
Image

When it breaks you may or may not notice it and it may or may not set a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) or CEL (Check Engine Light). Some of the symptoms are no reverse gear, harsh shifting into 3rd or 5th gear, or no shifting into 3rd gear. Continuing to drive your vehicle after this plate breaks will result in the plate breaking into smaller and smaller pieces. These pieces will be transported throughout the transmission by the fluid, could plug the filter, and will likely damage other components. This will result in a failed transmission and a hefty repair bill. Replacing the wave plate before it fails is the only way this can be prevented. The wave plate will not fail at a certain mileage, as it is dependent on the number of shift cycles the transmission goes through. We've seen failures as early as 40,000 miles (65,000 km) to as many as 110,000 miles (177,000 km). Also, if the transmission is repaired instead of replaced with a new or remanufactured unit, pieces of the wave plate can remain in the transmission and do further damage if it is not properly and completely cleaned, resulting in the failure of other components and another repair bill.

Most of the affected vehicles are now outside of the 5 yr / 100,000 mile powertrain warranty, so there is no obligation on GM's part to warranty or contribute assistance to the cost of the repair. If you are the original owner of the vehicle or bought the vehicle with a GM CPO warranty, GM has provided partial out-of-warranty assistance, but it has been on a case-by-case basis.

There are many, many threads on AcadiaForum.net discussing this situation and the experiences of Acadia owners. Please read them and strongly consider this preemptive service to prevent yourself from being stranded somewhere and stuck with a more expensive repair down the road. According to GM's TSB for the wave plate failure (#09-07-30-012F: No Reverse, 3rd or 5th, Check Engine Light Illuminated, DTC P0776 (Replace 3-5 Reverse Clutch Plate (Waved) - (Sep 26, 2012)), the part number for the new wave plate is P/N 24254103 - PLATE, 3-5 REV CLU (WAVED). Check with your dealer to be sure.

This is all well and good if you have an extra $1,000.00 to spare. I know that I don't!

I'm wondering if there's any correlation with the failures and the place at which the transmission was assembled - some are put together at a GM plant in Warren, MI; others are assembled at some villa in MX.

It's entirely possible that two different manufacturing facilities are supplied from different sources. According to GMVIS, my transmission was made at the Warren, MI facility.

Where do you see that on your GMVIS? The only thing in regards to my tranny I see is on the build sheet, code # MH6. And I see "added option code" BG, wonder that is?

You have to go to the Vehicle Component Summary page to find that info. It's not on the Build Sheet or the base Vehicle Summary page.

Is that an open offer to accept VIN #'s in exchange for data?
Yes, within reason. ;) I'm just a regular joe/volunteer here with a regular job, so it may take awhile for me to reply to requests. Also, I'm rarely around here on the weekends.

Thanks for the component list GeoHawk! :thumb:

Our cars were built at the same time, both Warren transmissions. Yours failed at 66K, as of yesterday Have Blue is still rolling at nearly 99K.
Who knows.... still contemplating a pre-emptive plate replacement, but I also need tires soon. Argh....

Just saw mine completely apart...metal fragments throughout the transmission...wave plate is fine...BUT...tech said it was replaced...and whoever did it did NOT do what they should have as far as cleaning and flushing it out... :angryfire:

I can see folks lining up now; GeoHawk is generous with his GMVIS access so everyone be patient

One reason to try and get a refurb tranny

Thanks to GeoHawk for the assist in pulling the info from GMVIS...very helpful...

So the transmission wave plate was "replaced" 43,871 miles on March 01, 2013...when the professional transmission shop I take it to at 76,000 miles a little over a year later...and about 4 months outside of the powertrain warranty was up...pulls it apart and finds....metal shavings out the wazoo...all throughout the system...and the wave plate the dealership installed is completely intact...which means they did not complete the work properly the first time...

I know I am going to have to pay for the the full amount...it's out of warranty...but...if the transmission going out this time was because the dealership didn't perform the job the right way and clean the system completely...what then?? Do they just get off the hook???

I do find one thing strange about these discussions. Folks talk about having the tranny rebuilt versus being replaced with a re-manufactured unit. While the re-manufactured unit is probably the way to go because of the warranty.....a competent mechanic can rebuild your tranny and make it every bit as good as a re-manufactured unit.

What I find strange is I rarely read of someone also having the torque converter replaced at the same time....when the wave plates self destruct and debris starts pumping through the system.....you can flush the torque converter until the cows come home and you will never be able to flush all of the debris from it....just a matter of time until the tranny once again self destructs... am I missing something?

GeoHawk is being VERY VERY generous.

Though folks-- please make request of him ONLY if you REALLY REALLY need the info.
and not just for general inquiries that are not urgent or can easily be found with a little searching.

Why do I say this?
It went something like this...

on another GM forum- where a member was being generous and providing data....
must have been a large amount of data I guess....
Well-- somehow GM caught on that info was being given out---

GM sent lawyers to the dealer-
The Lawyers and boss- presented the employee with a Cease and decist letter.
Something about proprietary data vs your job

The forum member did come on the forum and say- he was sorry- no more data..
as he was concerned about losing his job.
