Sour milk Smell inside car

now that the weather here in MI has been pretty hot these past few days, I have a horrific oder in the car.
Nothing has spilled, no rotting food from the kids, no wet carpets. I'm at a loss.

The AC is dead, I am having it looked at on Monday. I am not running the fans or anything. I have been reading that people smell a manure smell if they have water or mold in their AC vent tubes. I am not sure if thats my problem.

how can I verify?

I vacuumed the car, and used baking soda on the rugs too. no change.

it will smell when you turn on the fan-- (AC OFF)- and the initial blast of air comes out--- it will have an odor to it.

or if the fan does not run-- maybe when youre moving fast enough and you select recirculate off--- and outside air vents thru....

also- some folks have reported a bed smell from the window area-- where the felt is....
roll down the window and smell that area.

i smell it right when i open the door. Darn near knock you over on 90* days.

I do not run the fans, as the AC is out. I smelled the doors - seem fine. No sun roof on the car either. Floors are dry. Smells like something rotting. I checked every nook and cranny - no luck

going to try the Lysol in the fresh air vents at the cowl and see it that helps

i take it in Monday for warranty work and I will have them investigate as well.

thanks

Rotten egg smell---- usually Catalytic converter issue.

No dead animals/blood splatter/etc under your chassis?
Do not take the "dead animal" comment lightly. It can and does happen. Animals crawl up in the engine compartment. However, I would think that smell would be more outside the vehicle. There may be a way for something to get into the duct work if there is a screen missing.

Sour milk certainly smells different that a rotting rodent.

Don't forget to check for something behind the underdash panels and in the rear storage tray.

I'd also check (and clean) the cowl where air enters the HVAC system. Hope no one pulled a joke on you and spilled something in there.

a buddy of mine had a horrible smell in his bonneville one time that finally went away. turns out a chipmunk got inside the vent and died and the smell went away after it eventually all dried up. they found it when they were servicing the car for something.

i took the mats out of the rear seat area - smell went away. boggles my mind. those mats are spotless.
gonna give them a good scrubbing and go from there.
I'd bet sometime along the way someone spewed (barfed) on the mat and it dried without anyone noticing it. Either that, or someone needs to wash their feet!

I'm thinking its a problem with AC drains. I have the same smell. Sour milk, not dead animal or barf. It will go away after AC runs for 10 minutes or so. But always comes back; but will go away completely if I don't run AC (like fall/winter and no water collects).

I had dealer clean HVAC system to the tune of $150+. It was gone for about 6 weeks, but then came back. I won't waste that money again unless it permanently cures the problem.

My vote is for the AC drain issue...

When they did this service, did they clean the rear HVAC, too?
