Uh oh... yah, those instructions are pretty bad. I ended up busting my end cap trying to remove it (per the instructions). $50 later :angryfire:

My word of warning if it says "depress", they really mean "push in" and not down.

Search around the forum some more. There's plenty of posts on cross rail installations.

 

Yeah there's plenty of responses for previous model year cross rails, but for 2010 apparently there was a redesign so I'm not sure how much is posted to this point. :-\

 

This is good to know, we're thinking about getting the cross rails later with the Thule bin. I might have to search around for specific instructions when it comes my time to break things.

If I get the cross rails, do I NEED a rack or carrier to carry luggage, or can I just secure my bags to the roof of the car between the cross rails and side rails with a blanket laid first to protect the paint? Seems to me this would be equivalent to using a cargo bag but without spending the money? Any thoughts, experiences, pictures would be appreciated....

 

You could certainly buy just the rails and lay a roof bag between them. I would be cautious about how much weight you lay on top of the sun roofs (if equipped). Also make sure that you get the correct rails; the roof system for the 10 Acadia was redesigned

What I do instead- is use a Thule cargo bag (about $80- and prob cheaper if you search ebay).
In the past- on 1600 mile road trips- I have all my passengers give me bulky items (like shirts, shoes etc.) and I place their items in plastic bags. and stuff them into the bag. the plastic bags- are just in case we run into rain. The bags are water resistant (not waterproof). at 60-80 MPH--- water finds its way in thru seams etc.
But the shoes and clothes- are what I place in there- and then I place the bag directly on the roof.

at 1st- I placed towel under the bag---but soon found out that at highways speeds- that towel WILL move.
I had to keep checking it (sometimes it even flapped and thumped the roof).
Eventually I stopped using it- and didnt see any paint scratches on the roof.

I learned the hard way a number of years ago that luggage on the roof outside of a cargo box is not a good idea. We ran into a huge storm in FL and the entire contents of the luggage got soaked. I purchased the Sears unit right after that. But I no longer take those trips so everything fits INSIDE the car these days.

 

ahhh- see I read in the paperwork that it was water repellant- not waterproof-- and just put stuff in bags... expecting rain...
Thoug heavy fog--- will form water drop- that can make the way in.

 

Ok here I am stressing out about getting cross rails based on all the comments about how difficult they are to install, etc etc etc. 15 minutes later I have them installed on my 2010 SLT-1, no issues here at all am I missing something? :cheers:

Just tonight I installed the first half of the Yakima RailGrab system. I've wanted to have a functional roof system for some time, and had gone back-n-forth on buying the factory cross rails vs. Yak or Thule. While on a recent camping trip to Utah I did notice the re-designed roof rails on a 2010 rental. I was a bit jealous at first, but only until I re-read a post on this forum from soccrfan. Based on soccrfan's excellent posts & pics, I ordered the RailGrab. My first use will be for a mtn bike and road bike - & possibly later I'll get a kayak cradle. I wanted to have as much flexibility as possible for various accessories - & I concluded that this set-up would be great. The kit (two 58" round bars, plus the four rail mounts) was $179 delivered.

Having had both the factory crossrails and yakima on my 08 and now having the yakima on my 2010...I would recommend the yakima. Granted the yakima is a little bit noisier but your options are so expanded on what you can carry. I did get a wind fairing for the rack and that has made a huge difference in the whistle. It is worth the $60.

There was little noise w/ the factory so that is a benefit if you don't carry a lot of gear like me.

I can fit four-five bikes easily on the top and can fit three plus my thule box. It gives endless options to those who like to haul their gear like me! I can post pics of my 2010 set-up if people need it.

 

I am having the exact same problem with the new rails I bought from my GM dealer for my 2010 Acadia. (part number 12499868) The instructions say to insert something in the hole on the inside of the rear rail cap. There is no hole there however. Sure could use an answer. Help Please!

I just installed the rails on my new 2010. According to my dealer parts dept, there was a running change to the side rails (and therefore the cross rails) on the 2010's. The earlier versions used a cross rail that has a thumb screw, which allows the cross rails to adjust. The later version, which is also carried over on the 2011's, uses just hex screws. Is there any chance that you have the wrong version? Did the dealer check your side rails before ordering your cross rails?

It sounds like the dealer sold you the wrong crossrails. If you have the newly designed 2010 rails then you'll need part number 19213473. I just installed a set on my 2010 SLE and had no issues at all. In fact, someone with minimal mechanical skills can install these without reading the instructions. It's a VERY basic installation that should take less than 15 minutes.

Can you provide the part number(s) for the rail grabber and cross bars? I need to fit a Thule box and kayak, and this sounds like it would work. I may try to find these locally, and want to make sure I get the right set. Thanks!

Bars to fit...depends how much extension you want away from the car. Personal choice and what you are going to carry.
The pictures show 66" bars...had them from my Tahoe which was a little wider. I like them because I can put a bike tray on the outside if needed.

+1 Quick installation. Just wondering though, The adjustable side of the cross rail, are they designed to stay loose like that or should they be tightened? Although I tried tightening and it wont anymore.

Question: Should I purchase factory ones or another manufacturers..! ie. Yakima or Thule.
I'm worried about the weight of a Thule carrier, bikes or skis and the GMC rails being able to support them.

Any advice?

To answer the question, the roof rails are rated by GM to hold 200 pounds.

 

I would stay with what matches the truck, I wouldn't want to damage the exisiting rails some how.
