Remanufactured Rack and Pinion for 2010 SLT Crunching Noises
Hello all,
Not sure if this is the correct category for this question, but not sure where else to put it. Anyways, got 222K miles on my 2010 GMC Acadia. Never had the rack and pinion or anything in the power steering system replaced before. In the last few months it has developed a crunching noise that I can't pin down exactly where it is. Sounds like its coming from the front drivers side corner.
Just replaced my struts and went in for an alignment and was told there was play in the rear upper forward control arms, so I will be checking that out, but I don't think that would be contributing to the noise. Car has recently had all wheel bearings replaced, front CV Shafts (FWD) and now the struts, and the crunching noises are still there.
I seem to notice it when I put an immediate load on the engine or pressing the brakes, like when going through the drive thru. Has the OEM motor and tranny mounts, not sure if those could be causing. Rack and Pinion would be my next guess, although I have no leaks anywhere.
Any input? Also as title says, has anyone purchased a reman R&P from RockAuto? I was looking at the Cardone, not sure if anyone has used them before. If you've used any reman from that list, what's your opinion? TIA

Update 2: I have gone through and checked all the suspension components, curious about this one. Its kinda hard to see but in the beginning of the video I am barely putting any effort into moving that bushing, the rear bushing is even harder to see because the car is moving, but it is barely moving as well. There are also pictures of the stabilizer bar bushings on both sides, you can see the small gap in the driver side bushing, is this gap big enough for there to be a rubbing issue below?
I have 2011 with same crunch like noise thats been going on for 5 years i had gm corporate involved in it they put microphones on passenger side in the engine bat and wheel well area and they couldnt reproduce it but the minute i get in the car with manager sitting in passenger side i was able to reproduce it and i told them "thats the sound" and all i got from them " we dont know what that is" (go figure) i couldnt expect much from them its gm , i said you could replace part by part and test it out after each part and swap it back if thats not it and move on to the next component and he said we cant just throw money at it in hopes of fixing . 40000$ car and thats the treatment i get .Gl in your search for fix hope you find answers cause gm route is no go at least for me it was.
Interested if any update on this forum has been made? I have a 2008 Acadia 140k miles. Rebuilt transmission 10k miles ago. New wheel hubs. Struts are good. Rest of a uspension is good. Steering rack again is my guess and or something to do with the upper intermediate steering shaft. About to try a test and see if I can pinpoint the intermediate shaft myself.

Before you drop a ton of cash into it, try replacing the stabailizer bar bushings. Cheap and pretty easy to do, grease them on install.
From your description, That's my best guess, however there's a bunch of rubber bushings that could be making that noise. I don't think you need a rack, problems with them don't present themselves like that.
