The reasons are far to many to list and substantiate.
By all means elaborate (with reliable and reputable sources) so we can all be properly informed by other than internet 'knowledge'.
But the most obvious advantage of most premium fuels, are the “premium” detergents that are contained in the “premium” fuel.
That may be true for some brands but for most the only difference is the octane rating with no additional 'premium' additives. Again, please provide some reputable sources.

The Holden Acadia 3.6 litre in Australia recommends 91 which is our base fuel. We have E10, 91,95 and 98 octane, I assume octane ratings are the same worldwide.

Pretty sure they're not actually, your octane is calculated differently.

Octane ratings are pretty much the same world-wide, but there are 2 different ratings - RON (Research Octane Number) and MON (Motor Octane Number). RON and MON are determined differently and MON is always the lower number of the two.

In most of the world the octane number on the pump is the RON. In the US it's the average of the two (R+M)/2 so the number on the pump for the identical gas will be lower in the US than elsewhere.

Thanks for the reminder. Forgot about the combined R/M rating
