I am going to peform a rear differential fluid change. Does anyone know the quantity of fluid needed? I was going to use the GM OEM fluid, unless you have other recomendations. I am at 30K.

This sounds like it's not enough, but this is what I found:

Differential Lubricant Fill Quantity
0.8 liters
0.85 quarts

Here is what is listed in the AMSOIL application guide. From this it takes 1.7 pints. You can use AMSOIL's Severe Gear oil. I highlighted both in red. You would need one qt, there are 16oz in a pint, 32 in a qt. A quart of the Severe Gear retail would cost $13.25, if you were a Preferred Customer then it would be $10.25. I don't know where you are located. You can look up in the Yellow pages for an AMSOIL dealer or call around to various parts stores. Here in N.C. NAPA carries AMSOIL and some Car Quest stores. If have any questions you can PM me.

Huh, .85 quarts = 1.7 pints

Didn't sound like enough but I guess it is.

Thanks Rat :)

I changed both the Differential and the Transfer Case the other day. It went pretty smooth. I had to figure out that it was a 10mm hex, but no big deal. In addition the drain on the transfer case was so close to the exhaust pipe it was hard to get a ratchet in there. I used the 10mm hex socket and a open ended wrench to break it.

The only other thing I noticed was the GOD AWFUL SMELL of the rear diff fluid. OMG it was nasty.

I replaced both with standard AMSOIL Synth 75w-90 Gear Oil.

Anyway, I filled both until a little dripped out of the fill hole and actually the vehicle seemed to drive a lot better after the fluid change. It has about 30K on it now.

First timer at both these operations. Let me know if you if you have questions/issues with what I did.

Thanks.

Holy cr__, I know this is an old topic... but my dealer just quoted me about $400 to change fluid in the difs and transfer case!? I have 60K miles, I don't think it's been done yet. I'll have to check my manual to see what the service interval is "by the book". Anyone else have a dealer do this...?

(Dealer also told me the battery was getting weak, and to consider repalcing before next winter. Maybe I'll try the load test device I have to check it out).

Told me all this when I picked my Acadia up from 60k mile service. Ouch!

I breezed through the 07 manual but didn't see anything on dif and transfer case fluid change; although I'm sure changing the fluid wouldn't hurt.

I wouldn't be suprised if it were considered to be "filled for life."

But as was said, changing it wouldn't hurt anything but the wallet.
