Homelink system fading

The Homelink system (called Universal Home Remote System in my owner's manual) in my '09 Acadia is fading. I can open the garage door with it while my vehicle is inside the garage, but after I've backed out, the system won't close the garage door. When I return home, it won't open the garage door, but after I've driven into the garage I can close the garage door with the system. How can that be? While inside the garage, the vehicle is directly beneath the garage door opener. When in the driveway, it's within maybe a dozen feet. The system surely should work within that range -- until recently it worked much farther away than that. What part of the system is failing, and what's the fix?

2009 Acadia SLT-2 AWD, 8 pass., Red Jewel Tintcoat, Light Titanium, Bose radio/NAV. Ordered on 8/29/08; delivered on 10/10/08.

The transmitter is located inside the overhead console. You never say how other remotes for the door opener are working.

That's because I don't know. My daughter's remote for the door is 200 miles away, and my wife's is in her car 600 miles away right now and will be for nearly 2 weeks.

I don't understand that business of the system in my vehicle working while it's in the garage but not when it's in the driveway just outside the garage door. Is the problem with my Acadia or with the door opener itself?

That question could be easily answered if you had another remote to test the opener.

Impeccable logic!

I was hoping somebody who'd had a similar problem would share his experience and solution to the mystery.

Someone else's problem could be the exact opposite of yours!

You have several options available to find out what's wrong:

1. See if someone (like a service center) knows a way to scan-test the Universal Home Remote System transmitter,
2. Get a new Universal Home Remote System for the car and try it,
3. Find a friend with the Universal Home Remote System in their car and 'temporarily' link it to your opener, or
4. Get a new opener for the garage and start over with the car's Universal Home Remote System.

Look through the service manual to see if there's any discussion about trouble-shooting the Universal Home Remote System. You'll find a link to download the manual elsewhere in the forum.

Could be a stretch, but I had the same issue, very frustrating. Did you happen to put LED light bulbs in your garage door opener? They are known to interfere with the operation and cause those exact issues, and what you describe was exactly what was happening to me. Once I swapped the bulbs out my problem was gone.

Worth a try.

Interesting that you should post that at this time, I was about to submit a new one of my own.

The day after I opened this thread I did some Google searching for my Homelink problem, and I did see some people saying that LED bulbs could be the cause. The idea seemed very strange to me, but I supposed it could be true. But then, I don't have any LED bulbs installed anywhere in my house. So that's not why I was having trouble.

Even more interesting is that ever since that first day, I have had no problem opening the garage door from either inside or outside the garage. It happened twice that one day but hasn't happened since. No idea why the change, and no idea why the problem arose in the first place. I just hope it doesn't return.

I do appreciate the suggestions offered by all who responded.
