Service Side Detection System

Less then 3 years ago, I bought a new GMC Acadia.
Today I took my Acadia to the service department at Luther GMC in Brooklyn Park MN, due to some messages on the dash to "service the side detection system." The service department stated that there was internal (electrical) module failures in the right and left rear side detection sensors. They also mentioned that there was some corrosion in the harness at the left module. The service department mentioned that the price to fix this issue is over $1600. With 47,000 miles, my vehicle is just outside the 3 year/36,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty.

I understand that parts wear out and fail over time, although to me these electronic failures with less then 50k miles, seem to be more of a manufacturing quality issue with GM. Especially the corrosion in the wire harness connection. You would think that GMC could design a wire connector to last over 100,000 miles.

Has anybody else experienced this issue? Is the price of over $1600 to fix reasonable? This seems very high for a vehicle that is relatively new. Is there a process that I should pursue for commercial policy from GMC to cover the cost?

Is it possible to just turn the feature off? I've replaced 3 modules in 3 years and don't want to replace them again. The light on the driver side is now burnt out. The passenger side is on all the time. Can I simply turn the system off or somehow turn the light off on the passenger side?

Should be in the section for "Vehicle Personalization," or similar title, of your owner's manual.

The LCA system can be turned off in the vehicle settings on the infotainment screen. At least on my vehicle it can be turned off.

I asked at the dealership yesterday. I was told they can't turn off the side detection lights because they are considered a safety feature. Although now that my lights are on all the time they seem to be more of a hazard, especially because they are so bright at night. I suppose they'll burn out soon.

Can't see what year or model you have, but I can assure you the LCA system on my '17 Denali can be turned off as I described above.

Earlier post from another thread says 2013. The member is talking about Side Blind Zone Alert (SBZA), which was, IIRC, optional for the first time that year. Manual makes reference to driver turning the system off in discussion about it, but doesn't give any further info about how to do that. I think an exploration of the car's DIC menu is in order.

I have a 2013.5 SLT 2 Acadia. I can't seem to find where I can turn it off on my Infotainment system. Thinking about buying those little round fish eye mirrors and just sticking them over the lights. In fact I should just say "light" because the one on my driver side is already burnt out.

In any event, it's unfortunate this is such a problem on the vehicle with no acknowledgement from the manufacturer for a solution.

I have another issue with the air bag sensors. Turns out it has something to do with the receiver for my seat belt. Has anyone else had this issue? Is it just a matter of replacing the seat belt receiver? It's easy and cheap to buy a used one.

The DIC buttons are used for vehicle personalization - not the Infotainment system. Here are references and instructions found in the 2014 manual about disabling the SBZA:

"SBZA can be disabled through the
Driver Information Center (DIC). See
Driver Information Center (DIC) on
page 5-23. If SBZA is disabled by
the driver, the SBZA mirror displays
will not light up"

"SIDE BLIND ZONE ALERT
If the vehicle has the Side Blind
Zone Alert (SBZA) system, this
display allows the system to be
turned on or off. Once in this
display, press the set/reset button to
select between ON or OFF. If you
choose ON, the system will be
turned on. If you choose OFF, the
system will be turned off. When the
SBZA system is turned off, the DIC
will display the SIDE BLIND ZONE
ALERT SYSTEM OFF message as
a reminder that the system has
been turned off. See Object
Detection System Messages on
page 5-36 and Side Blind Zone Alert
(SBZA) on page 9-35."
