Sticky: Traverse 17" rims and tires (for winter or possible 18" replacement)

Ok folks. I know that summer is just upon us now, but I'm starting to research winter tire/wheel options.

Does anyone know if the traverse underpinnings are exactly the same as the Acadia. Reason being, they have 17" rims on the lower models. I'd prefer to go with 17" vs 19" as there is more options for winter tires and alot cheaper. I noticed tirerack has some fairly cheap 17" aftermarket rims that supposedly fit the traverse (ie should fit acadia also), and those are what I am looking at.

Thanks in advance.

Jeff

There is a good bit of useful info here, so I am changing the title and making it a sticky.

Re: 17" rims (for winter)

Yes- all Lambda models use the same bolt pattern, so the wheels from one will fit the other. The trick is to find the proper diameter of 17" tire. We discussed replacement tires for the OEM 18" ones here, and the selection is incredibly limited for some reason.

I visited the Tire Rack (TR) website and looked up a 2009 FWD Traverse LS. The size shown is 245/70-17. TR has 4 pages of tires in this size! Prices range from $105 for Kumho Road Venture APT KL51 to $165 for Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor. They also have some aggressive tread off road type tires if you search by size w/o putting in a vehicle.

When I entered a 2009 Traverse LT, I got 255/65-18 as the OEM size (same as Acadia). TR lists ONE tire (the OEM Goodyear) in this size for $158. :angryfire:

I then went to the 1010 Tires size comparison page, and compared the two sizes:
18" Section Width: 10.03 in 255 mm
17" Section Width: 9.64 in 245 mm

18" Rim Diameter: 18 in 457.2 mm
17" Rim Diameter: 17 in 431.8 mm

18" Rim Width Range: Unrecognized tire size.
17" Rim Width Range: 6.5 - 8 in <---Traverse LS is 7.5" wide :thumb:

18" Overall Diameter: 31.05 in 788.67 mm
17" Overall Diameter: 30.50 in 774.7 mm

18" Sidewall Height: 6.52 in 165.60 mm
17" Sidewall Height: 6.75 in 171.45 mm

18" Radius: 15.52 in 394.20 mm
17" Radius: 15.25 in 387.35 mm

18" Circumference: 97.54 in 2477.5 mm
17" Circumference: 95.81 in 2433.5 mm

18" Revs per Mile: 669.8
17" Revs per Mile: 681.9

18" Actual Speed: 60 mph 100 km/h
17" Speedometer reads: 61.0 mph 101. km/h

Speedometer Difference: - Speedometer Difference: 1.806% too fast
Diameter Difference: - Diameter Difference: 1.78%

Pretty close, so I played with the width and aspect ratio.

255/70-17 is a perfect fit on paper:
18" Section Width: 10.03 in 255 mm
17" Section Width: 10.03 in 255 mm

18" Rim Diameter: 18 in 457.2 mm
17" Rim Diameter: 17 in 431.8 mm

18" Rim Width Range: Unrecognized tire size.
17" Rim Width Range: 6.5 - 8.5 in <---Traverse LS is 7.5" wide :thumb:

18" Overall Diameter: 31.05 in 788.67 mm
17" Overall Diameter: 31.05 in 788.67 mm

18" Sidewall Height: 6.52 in 165.60 mm
17" Sidewall Height: 7.02 in 178.30 mm

18" Radius: 15.52 in 394.20 mm
17" Radius: 15.52 in 394.20 mm

18" Circumference: 97.54 in 2477.5 mm
17" Circumference: 97.54 in 2477.5 mm

18" Revs per Mile: 669.8
17" Revs per Mile: 669.8

18" Actual Speed: 60 mph 100 km/h
17" Speedometer1: 60 mph 100 km/h

Speedometer Difference: - Speedometer Difference: 0%
Diameter Difference: - Diameter Difference: 0%

TR has two pages of tires in this size. They range from $112 for General Ameritracs to $174 for Michelin LTX M/S.

EDIT
The 17" option would require buying new wheels and reusing your pressure sensor monitors (TPMS) or buying new ones. I priced a set of the 17" aftermarket wheels at Tire Rack along with the least expensive General 255/70-17 tires and new TPMS sensors. Total was around $1285 shipped to FL. This is about twice the cost of replacing the stock 18" tires with either non-Goodyear brands (Hankook) in the stock size or using the 275/60-18 size as noted in the 18" tire thread.

Re: Sticky: Traverse 17" rims and tires (for winter or possible 18" replacement)

Since I tend to think about things all the time, I have made this topic a sticky in the event the 18" OEM tire size selection does not improve. As the Traverse continues to sell, there may be an increasing supply of 17" aftermarket wheels. Combined with the 255/70 tire, this is a viable option for the Acadia.

The 17x7.5 steel wheels for the Traverse are already listed on car-part.com, an online junkyard directory, for between $75~85 each. The two alloy wheels listed on TR are $135~139 each as of today.

I run 17" Traverse Steel rims, new TPMS Sensors, and Firestone Winterforce tires 255/70/17 on my Acadia for the winter. It is almost identical diameter to my summer tires on the stock 18" rims 255/65/18

OK. Just so I'm clear (as I'm looking for an extra set of wheels on ebay/craigslist to put some snow tires on) any year Acadia wheel in any size (and its accompanying tire presure sensor) will work fine as a wheel on our 2011 SLT2? I'm currently looking at 18" wheels from various sources.....

Thanks in advance!

Save some money and drop to the 17" steel rim, 18" snow tires for the Acadia cost a lot of money. Also, it looks kick-*** to have the black steel rims on for winter, makes the Acadia look angry!

Re: Sticky: Traverse 17" rims and tires (for winter or possible 18" replacement)

Well, got the tires and wheels on. At the tire place, they got the TPMS to work. The car lost contact with one of them later that day (while accelerating onto the freeway), and the next morning the car lost its connection with the other three (again while accelerating onto the freeway).

Anyone have a similar experience? Again, these are approx 2008 TPMS on a 2011 vehicle. Could it be low batteries in the TPMS? Could it be a simple compatibility issue (i.e. i need to get new ones installed).

Re: Sticky: Traverse 17" rims and tires (for winter or possible 18" replacement)

Hi
We have a 2011 Denali coming (being moved from another dealer) and I asked about winter tires.
Here is the info I got from my dealer in London, Ontario today and just wanted to share it.

"Our parts department recommends 17x7.5” black steel winter wheels. They are $100 each. Tire pressure monitors are 40.60 each. If you prefer Blizzaks, then model DMV1 235/75/17 should be the tire. They are $263 each. We will store your rims and tires here and switch them fall and spring for $30. This includes TPMS programming."

Re: Sticky: Traverse 17" rims and tires (for winter or possible 18" replacement)

Hello all

First post to this site.
We bought a 2008 Acadia this weekend for my wife.
It has the 19" wheels.

We live at 5000' in a high desert mountian area, adjacent to a high sierra mountain area. We drive though all coditions, and on our hilly ranch area the private roads get covered in deep snow most winters. Mud can be an issue too. Our Cross Country Volvo have handled it wearing General all-terrain truck tires. This 17" wheel thread is what got me to join the site and join the conversation.

Those who have run the 17" wheels - is there no problem with the braking system, with easy fit and no modification?

I'm seeing some good possible choices for all terrain tires, and some possible mud-terrain choices too.
This is interesting.

Thanks so much!

Don't run the 17s myself, but can tell you this: The 17-inch wheel is a factory option for the Chevy Traverse. The Traverse and Acadia are essentially the same car. Factory wheels from a Traverse will fit on the Acadia with no modification whatsoever.

NO LISTEN same bolt pattern but smaller hole on outlook/enclave/traverse.. I remember went in scrap yard try to fit some rims but Gmc Acadia have bigger wheels studs so the holes of the outlook/enclave/traverse rims are smaller but same pattern 6x 132 if I remember IT DOESN'T FiT 2007 to 2012... So everyone talking but no one can say the only true ... Everyone talk but no one really know ... Save your money don't buy rims with smaller holes and stop listening ******** on forums...
