mmmm, I wonder why my manual lift gate has been okay going on 3rd winter.  Perhaps the strutts are beefier.  We open the rear hatch on average 6x's a week.

I would think the struts are the same as the power can be turned off and used as the manual one.

Our liftgate was not broken- I took a word of mouth report on it & while she & kid Blue were out yesterday the kid figured out the dash switch was in the off position.

Second winter, about 45K miles, tailgate started doing same as described in previous posts with no advance warning of trouble.  Dealer is getting two new struts, waiting to hear if covered by extended warranty.  Will advise for benefit of those over the manufacturer's warranty limit.

Dealer replaced both struts under GMPP warranty!  Finally got a break!

Even though this topic hasn't been posted to in a while, this and the guillotine post seem to most adequately describe our issue.  In power mode, the gate goes up and when it nears the top, you hear a loud thump like the lifting gears skip or something.  Then the door comes down pretty quickly and shuts.  The only way to keep it open is to turn off the power and stick something in it a like a golf club.  Now if the golf club breaks or slips, you are going to be seriously hurt because now it is in guillotine mode.  Any hopes of fixing this myself?  I have a 2008 purchased November 2007 and it has 54,000 miles and i have not purchased any extended warranty.  Any hopes of repair being covered?  Can anyone educate me on the dealer fix so i can be prepared when facing them?  One Last Q, could i advise the dealer to forget the power fix and just get it to work (raise and stay up) without power, cheaper fix?

dsj999,

This is the closest item I could find for your situation for dealer fixes.  It describes the liftgate closing slowly instead of dropping as you describe, but replacing the liftgate struts would be the cheapest, first attempt at a fix.  The struts run anywhere from about $20-30 each.

#08-08-66-005B: Power Liftgate Diagnosis and Repair Information - (Jul 21, 2010)

Power liftgate closes immediately after fully opening. Usually has a loud clunking noise at top of gate travel just before power closing.

A customer and/or technician may comment that when using the power liftgate, it will open fully, drop a few inches, then power close.

Cause
Weak strut(s) (PLG goes into a customer safe mode and power closes gate slowly).

Correction
Turn off the power liftgate using the disable switch in the bottom of the center stack. Manually open the liftgate to the full open position using the exterior liftgate pull handle. Verify that the liftgate will remain at or near the full open position for several minutes. If the liftgate will not remain open, replace the liftgate strut(s) that are weak. Though both struts should be inspected for weakness, it is often only the LH strut that requires replacement. It is important to note that the LH and RH assist struts have two different part numbers and each should be installed in its proper location.

Glad to read that the dealer fixed it under warranty. I'll be taking mine in this week for the same thing - it opens but then makes a loud clunk and falls down (not good when your head is in the way). I have about 80,000 miles on mine though and never any problems - until now.

There's a cd stuck in the dvd/cd player and the little rubber knob which covers a plastic piece on the gas door just broke.  I guess that's not too bad after 80,000 miles in 3-1/2 years.

Thanks everyone. My wife told me the liftgate quit working the otherday. I had forgot the switch could be turned off. Sure enough it was.

My wife's acadia was having the same problem.  The liftgate would drop once it got to the top.  I simply ordered two new struts from Ebay (GM Parts - $80 delivered) and installed them myself.  It look 2 minutes per strut to replace  thumbs up   It was so simple I had my wife change one side.

Problem solved.

I just took mine to the dealer (body shop) for the same problem. Huh? They are going to order two new struts and pay for them thumbs up They told me the reason the door only raises a little then shut is because the computer detects to many amps being pull by the lift gate motor an closes the heavy lift gate to save the motor. Most likely bad struts. My door would not stay up even in manual mode.

2008 Power lift gate opens about 75% then automatically closes on its own. when manually trying to open it is a dead weight. The range of travel has changed and will not stay open. Is there a way to adjust the range of travel for the lift gate?

You can't adjust the range of the door; sounds like the struts are bad or the liftgate control module is bad

sounds like the struts are weak...
it allows the motor to work up to a certain point- where the door is too heavy for the motor- and it goes into reverse when it strains too much to open.

For those of you that have replaced the struts yourselves, how hard was it?  I see some one said it just took a few minutes, but my husband is not a car guy.  Can he still do it?  Also, where are the best places to get them?  I have never used ebay for car parts and am a little wary.  I will have to say, I will miss the workout I get holding it up to pack for a tailgate.  My towel has never spun so fast!
