Recently took my 07 Acadia into the dealership with an issue with the front right wheel hopping...front right strut seal has failed and oil leaked out.

Dealer informs me that you have to replace both front units at a cost of $1200.

It is 10,000 KM over expired warranty...my god new front struts...only driven on paved roads.

Any other owners have similar issue??

I'm guessing there wasn't any oil leakage that you could see?  Not trying to throw blame around; just wondering if there were any signs before the failure

I just went over 40,000 on my '07 and the suspension is still tight.  In fact, the other day I was thinking that it still feels very good hitting the corners hard.  No problems... yet!  Although the oil seal leak is catastrophic failure, not a wear out failure; so I wouldn't feel them going away on me little by little.

Have you gotten a second price estimate? Most tire shops sell those as well, and probably for a lot less than the dealer.

As of today, $1200 CAD is $1029 USD.

I priced the front struts for a 2007 model at Rock Auto online and they range for $71 to $108 (USD) each for AC Delco brand. While I'm sure they hike up the parts cost, that's a lot of labor cost!

My wife's 07 had 28K miles on it when we needed to have the struts replaced and have the transmission leak fixed.  Thankfully it was all covered under warranty.

Struts are a pain to replace and usually need special tools.  I don't know how to do them on the Acadia, but the last time I did them I just "rented" the tools from the auto parts place.  You pay full price on a credit card and they refund your money when you return them.  That being said, even with the tools it was a bear of a job.

I would check with some of the other repair shops.  I wouldn't have a problem putting something aftermarket like Monroe on these.  They sometimes run specials.  The cost of over a grand sounds very steep.

I hope this isn't the norm.

Doc, what did you do about the front-end alignment afterwards?  Did you forget about it, rent a rack or go get it done somewhere after the strut change?
 Huh?

I took it for an alignment at a shop.  I had some trouble getting it to work.  My brother had some sort of fancy thing to measure angles to get it close enough to get it to the shop.  It turned out to be OK because of the care taken in the installation.

If I had to do it over again, I would pay a shop to do it, but not the amount quoted by Aircooled4's dealer.  I would do it again for that price.

No problems with the struts on my Acadia. On my 03 Chevy S-10 the ACdelco rear shocks failed three times because they leaked oil. The first two times I had the dealer replaced under warranty with another set of ACdelco shocks. The third time I bit the bullet and bought a nice set of Ranhco shocks at Sears. Sears had a good deal going on buy four shocks and get labor for free. I think I paid $200ish for two rear shock and front two struts. $1200 is outrageous for one strut. I would suggest shopping around for a good deal outside the dealer.

Aircooled, your dealer took you for a ride!  That choice should have been left up to you even though it's a good idea to do to one side what you do to the other.  Shocks, struts, ball joints, linkages and the like shouldn't be viewed in the same light as brake systems.  That's where the 'both side philosophy' holds much more creedence.

Was there any signs of strut failure i.e. leaking fluid etc

I had a similar experience, my car was making a sound & a strange vibration under the driver side tire.  When changing the brakes, my husband found that the strut had leaked out all of the grease/oil. I called the dealership & gave them the information along with the mileage (27200) and when I asked them if it was under warranty I got the "we'll have to check it out & see" answer.  I was told to bring in my car & drop it off.  I went in "armed" with the TSB provided on this website & some other posts regarding this issue & warranty information (3 yr/ 36000 miles bumper to bumper...ring any bells??).  When I got there, the man behind the service desk started to tell me how the struts "get dirty", and that there was nothing wrong without even looking at my car.  Mildly aggrivated at this point  Angry(his tone in speaking to a female did not help), I explained that I had done some research & showed him the information.  He promptly dismissed my printouts showing me a "real" TSB.  and explaining how it has numbers associated with each one.  I then explained that it was from a website & oh look, it does have such a number.  At this point another male joined in telling me that there was no TSB on file with this type of compalint.  they told me to wait around & they would put my car on the lift & take the tires off to show me that there was no problem.

At this point, I went outside, called my husband who came to the dealership & their attitude completely changed.  And guess what, the service rep had a copy of the TSB --which read the same as mine!  GGRRRR flaming mad  By the end...the following are being replaced struts, bearings, and the steering box (which was leaking, apparently a seal failure).  Unfortunately, what this dealership fails to realize is that since they felt the need to blow me off for being a female, I will in turn blow them off when it comes time to turn in my lease & get a new vehicle.  In this tough economy, I can't imagine that dealerships can treat their customers this badly.  Thanks to those who have posted on this subject, maybe GM should consider a recall, obviously there is an issue!

That just sucks!  First of all to be treated as you were and then come to find out that you had a lot more wrong than previously thought.  What is your location?  we have some "heavy hitters" in the Illinois/Chicago area that could pay them a visit!

Can someone supply me with the TSB that is referenced in this thread?  Our front side driver strut is also leaking at 40,000 miles.

Thanks

The only TSB I can find relating to the struts is this one:

http://www.acadiaforum.net/forum/index.php?topic=1902.msg43402#msg43402

And it just deals with the strut mounts, not the actual strut.  I don't know what TSB user sandy is referring to.
