Well, my days of "trouble free" ownership with the wife's 2008 Enclave are over.  We just suffered what I am positive is the dreaded "Broken 3-5-R Wave Plate" failure.  I was driving her car over the weekend and experienced two episodes of engine rev followed by a hard shift between 2nd-3rd gear, but it only did it twice and drove fine the rest of the weekend.  I had a nagging worry that it was a sign of impending doom, and today I got the call from my wife that "I'm in the driveway and can't get the Enclave into reverse".  Sure enough, OnStar pulled down codes P0700 and P2715 which indicate the dreaded broken wave plate.  Just put her on the flatbed of a tow truck and sent her off to the dealership (the Enclave...not the wife) and will follow up with them in the morning.  The Enclave is 4 years old this week and has almost 68K miles.

Happy Birthday  happy birthday

My 42d is next month; and my Acadia has a new shiny Hydramatic  thumbs up

Any of your Lambda's on the original trans fluid?  The dealer mentioned when they opened up my trans that the fluid was very dark and "burnt" although I couldn't see that on the stick?

Hey, pretty cool...same age and all.  I guess I missed your travails with your transmission.  I had the fluid drained and refilled on both Lambda's at about 50K miles.  What happened to yours?

Well I started having intermittent shift issues from gear 3 and higher.  I also noticed some downshifts were a little "harder" than normal.  On one occasion; reverse engaged hard which really brought me to the idea of taking it in. I also noticed one time that the trans would skip 5th when accelerating onto the highway (it went from 4th to 6th).  Finally while driving along the service road to the dealer; I noticed that the trans would not shift out of 5th into 6th.  I parked it at the dealer and told them what I thought the issue was and they came to the same conclusion. My dealer first diagnosed the shift solenoid as being the culprit, but once they opened up the transmission; they found the dark fluid and metal shavings.

Glad you could get it replaced.....

Got an update from the dealer yesterday.  Not happy....they said that they found some more damage inside the transmission as one of the gears was damaged by wave plate debris and now they were going to have to replace one of the gears.  I wonder if they shouldn't just replace the entire transmission?

They ought to either do a complete rebuild or just replace the entire thing, IMO.  Of course, I'm never one for confrontation, so I probably wouldn't approach them about it.  But hey, if you feel okay bringing that to their attention, then I say it couldn't hurt.  Worst they are going to tell you is where to go with that idea I suppose.

Funny - these failures generally weren't widepsread before the 100K warranty program was rolled out.  Now that program is out there and the failures are happening in cases shortly after the 100K mark.  This really stinks.

essentially- it appears that wave plates failed- transmissions were repaired.
But some werent cleaned thoroughly--- so a TSB was put out to clean it very well and make sure there was no debris left over- as it could cause  bad operation due to the debris

My mileage was just shy of 68,000 miles and the repair is covered 100% under powertrain warranty.

I'm envious!  I don't think I've read of any others on here, other than mine, that have failed past the powertrain warranty.

Oh yeah, that's right....I forgot.  Maybe I should trade my Acadia at 105K if it still hasn't failed in mine (I have GMPP thru 111K).
I actually really like the 4x4 Tahoe I'm driving right now while my wife has my Acadia.  It has cylinder deactivation and 6 speed automatic and gets almost the same mileage as the Acadia.

I highly doubt I will keep mine beyond five years when my warranty expires. Too much risk - timing chains, tranny etc.

Well, I got the Enclave back and the transmission seems as good as new.  The following is what was on the ticket:

Found Code P2715 set for PC Solenoid 4 Stuck On and P0700 set due to TCM fault.  Removed transmission and completely disassembled.  Found 3.5.R Clutch Wave Spring(?) broken.  Replaced reaction sunshell, 3.5.R Wave Plate and Snap Ring, and Control Valve Body.  Disassembled Valve Body upper and lower for cleaning. Flushed transmission cooler lines.  Reassembled transmission and programmed TCM.  Parts replaced were:

24254103 - Plate
24237724 - Gasket
24262198 - Seal Kit
24243095 - Valve
88862156 - ATF Fluid
24223828 - Ring
24256292 - Gear
5089F - Brake Cle
89021677 - Gear Lube

I did get to talk to the transmission tech briefly who performed the rebuild and he has worked for Chevrolet dealership, a Land Rover dealership and most recently owned his own shop rebuilding heavy duty truck transmissions.  He said he got tired of "7 day work weeks" owning his own business and has been with this GMC dealership for a couple months.  He seemed very knowledgeable.  He pointed out to me the steering rack "rubbing/squeaking" and suggested I definitely go ahead and get that done so parts are ordered and I will get the steering rack rubbing/squeaking issue fixed next week.

Thanks to all for your comments.....so far so good!

What dealership did your work?  I'm in Birmingham too and have mine at Royal because it would not shift correctly.  It never happened with me driving but it happened twice to the Wife.  55 mph at 5500 rpm.  The dealer has diagnosed the problem as the TCM.
