Has anyone else had issues with their Blind spot detection system? Every time I start my vehicle I get a warning on my display that says "Service side detection system". The indicators in my mirrors will not come on when a vehicle is on my side or the passenger one will always be on. I've had the vehicle in 4 time and had a module replaced twice. It works for 2 weeks then I get the warning again. A crappy dealership near me does not seem to be able to fix it or care. Starting to think I have a lemon.
If you have this code thrown on your car take it in to your local dealership. The side detection module located on the back bumper is exposed becomes corroded and sends a bad signal to the rest of your car! Your car will run for awhile but eventually you will start having all kinds of technical issues.
Car won’t start
Heads up and dash go out
Radio won’t work
Door chimes even when shut
Windows won’t roll up and down
And others
It is a known GMC issue and they have put out a bulletin and extended warranty for this component. Get a call into a certified GMC dealership and see if your vehicle falls under the criteria do so before it’s to late. Hope this helps!
Not at all. Merged all the recent threads about the topic here - and there were several on which members posted today. All the information anyone could want about the Service Side Detection System message, including GM's recent SCA, is in the pages of this thread.
I used the “search engine” came back with 188 results. I do not have the time to respond 188 times to threads that are severely outdated and unmaintained! I wish someone else would of given me this info a year ago and 20k miles when it was first diagnosed and fell into the criteria of their “Extended Warranty”! I figured the best route was to start a new thread to provide info that is current and updated that will appear at the top of the list when someone does use the search function! Thank you for pointing Out a search function for the next time though!
Possibly a good amount of dielectric grease on the connector to the module might help? Or some other measure to prevent water from entering the module?
Thank you speleos! A year ago when the problem first presented for me the info was so sporadic. No one had an actual clue what was going on! Some had speculations. I just wanted to make sure the info was out there to help someone that might benefit. My local dealer has 10 in line before me. That’s just one authorized dealer out of thousands, so it’s a pretty big issue. It should have truly been a recall rather than an “Extended Warranty” but I of course didn’t get to make that call! These “smart” cars as I like to call them are awesome and convenient but when something in the electrical system starts to get wonky it can be hard for a DIY’er to get to the bottom of it!

A recall would have also involved every car equipped with the system. Many owners haven't experienced a problem with it. Imagine delays at the dealer from the flood of people rushing in for a free fix on something which isn't broken. The Side Detection system isn't a product safety issue. It's an optional 'tech toy' people only think they need. GM was generous to extend the warranty through their SCA program. Electronic gadgets aren't made to last forever.
Definitely agree! The husband and I have electrical backgrounds. Nothing lasts forever! I like to say technology is a blessing and curse! Sometimes it can be pretty challenging to follow a fault. In cars, without the right equipment and honestly even with the right equipment it can be an adventure. Some have experienced shut downs in the middle of driving from the bad signals being thrown. That is a more extreme symptom but it has happened. The week before I had it diagnosed I was accelerating after a stop light and my car began violently shaking I had to pull over. The dash went out and when I went to start it it took a couple of times for it to turn over. When I finally got a diagnosis they said the signal it was throwing was draining my battery. So it def is a luxury item but at the same time the design and application has a major flaw. Anyone who works with electronics knows exposure to the elements is a recipe for disaster. We all spent a lot of money on the Acadia it isn’t a cheap car. All we ask is that they do right by our hard earned money! Will it happen not always they are there to make money to not loose it! But one can hope humanity still has a hope!
If it's any comfort to you, seaprincess, you'll find GM isn't the only car maker facing this problem. They must share module producers with Mercedes, Chrysler, and others. Some of their customers are facing similar issues.
p.s. Hope for humanity is in a downward spiral. Technology will take over soon enough. Then, robots will rule the world. All that will happen before the next asteroid strike destroys everything as we know it. Who knows? Maybe a super volcano will wipe things out first.
Does anyone got their acadia fixed already since they sent out the letter of special coverage??? I just called the dealership today and after 2 months of wating, the parts is still backordered...
Speleos I am hoping for a Zombie Apocalypse!!!!?♀?♂
It astounds me how some people have no idea about cars? How in the world can you drive a 40+ thousand dollar vehicle and not know at least the basics???? That is why service shops stay in business for sure!
Another problem popped up on the dang Acadia that’s next on my list to troubleshoot the air conditioning went out on me of course during the hottest part of summer non the less! ?
This is our second Acadia and at 100k it starts nickel and diming you! Might be time to upgrade again!
rommel per my understanding it is a pretty widespread problem and there are waiting lists. Supposedly roll out of the next lot of parts is the end of the month! And further direction on fixing the problem so it doesn’t re occur! Unfortunately I am a commuter, and mom chaffeur so my current mileage exceeds the extended warranty ?! I have a ticket in with GM and the dealership rep is trying to work something out because I do have proof of issues when mileage was within the perameters so I’m hopeful but not holding my breath. The part is only a few hundred but a dealership quote will be somewhere in the 1200 dollar range. They soldered the contacts for me so that it wouldn’t throw bad signals but i unfortunately have a permanent warning light on my side mirrors along with no working rear assist!

delaneyblue was last seen here 4 years ago. You most likely will not get a response.
There was no recall on the blind side detection system. There was a special coverage offered for 6 years or 80k miles, and if I recall correctly, it was VIN specific. Those impacted would have received a special coverage letter from GM.
So after almost 8 months of waiting... my dealership said that the parts for my acadia is still not available... im losing my patience now, im having more problems now since the sensor broke down...
So I took the advice from here and contacted the GMC through Facebook messenger. Took a few weeks of talking because they respond 24 hours after you write them - they asked me to take the vehicle to the dealership and pay for diagnostics. I was going anyway for an oil change - the dealer said "yup, it's not working" and called me to set up an appointment for the repair free of charge. I did not need the letter I'm guessing that GMC from Facebook gave them the OK to replace the sensors and the harness.
From first contact to repair - less than 1 month and most of that was because I was out of town for a week over Christmas / New Year.
Thanks to everyone for the information abut the special letter and GMC contact info.
Mine didn't have the special letter either but after contacting GMC they contacted my dealership and everything was replaced for free (except the diag fee).
I just wanted to document that I have a 2015 Acadia Denali that 2 weeks ago started throwing the "Service Side Detection System" warning. I took my vehicle in last week for diagnostics at the GMC dealer and both the harness and sensor were bad due to water intrusion. My vehicle did not fall under the SCA for some reason(?).
The parts are on order, and should be in this week. A lovely $448 for parts, $50 diag fee, and then $200 for labor...
This weekend the entire car shut down - radio, dvd player, HUD, odometer LCD, it threw multiple errors, the infotainment center shut down - all the same issues other have found because of this faulty sensor. The car would not restart. I ended up using the remote start to get it back on after waiting about 15 minutes. Luckily I was parked when this happened.
It's pretty clear this is a bigger issue than what was just covered in the original SCA. This was a new to me vehicle, just over a month old - 1 previous owner... a huge bummer.
I'm working with GMC now to see what can be done. I'm curious if others had this issue and had it resolved if their vehicle did not fall w/in the SCA? Also, I really hope the issue that cropped up over the weekend get resolved with the sensor replacement, and not permanent.
Just had this exact thing happen to my 2013 Buick Verano. Very disappointed in response from GM. I know my car is 7 years old but it only has 36,000 miles on it and was driven very little in the winter months.
I inherited this car about 2 years ago with 3,500 miles on it so it is basically a new car. I still have the original tires and brakes still on it. I too started having the service side detection light come on about 6 months ago. Took it in to the dealer and they told me I would need to replace the modules and that this is a common issue. I continued to drive the vehicle and just pushed the menu button every time I started the car and it wouldn't continue to show warning. Just in the past month it started coming on much more as I was driving.
Just the other day all electronic gauges and computer warnings started going haywire, so now I either have to fix it or I can not use the vehicle. I went into dealership and asked if there was a bulletin on this and they replied no. So after spending some time researching this and finding out that this is an ongoing issue for many GM vehicles I decided to contact GM to acquire some kind of assistance. At first the lady I talked with made it seem like they were going to help me out with the situation, but just yesterday I was called by GM and they told me my claim was denied. Again very disappointed in GM.
I have been a GM loyal customer for the past 30 years. I have owned 16 GM vehicle and currently have three. I explained to the person on the other end that this decision has helped me make my mind up on my next lease that is up in 6 months and I planned on leasing 2 vehicles, as my girls who have shared this lease will now be graduated, and both need a car. And on top of that I was in the market for a new car within the year.
Very short sighted by GM not to help out its loyal customers or anyone with this obvious defective problem. I still have many years of purchasing vehicles and now have a bad taste for GM products. Maybe I will change my mind after a few months when the sting of this $1000 repair fades away but right now I am not happy.

Welcome to the forum.
GM won't turn back the clock on warranty work (even special extensions of warranty). That's regardless of customer loyalty. Every customer has to deal with that. The original delivery date was exceeded. Their flexibility only comes if the vehicle falls within the specified time period.
From what I've read. . with a little dexterity the modules can be purchased and replaced DIY.
Unless the connector ends are too far gone with corrosion. I think part of the GM fix included applying a liberal amount of dielectric grease to the wire harness connector and module socket. . to keep out water and slat from winter driving conditions.
GM's issuance of the SCA covering SBZA problems means the NHTSA is already aware of the problem and GM took appropriate action to remedy it by an extension of warranty. It's likely NHTSA was involved with the decision not to issue a recall.
Doesn't upset me in the least. I won't own a daily driver not covered by a factory warranty.
You call them secret warranties, GM calls them special coverage's.
You still did not answer the question. How long do you expect someone else to pay for your failed side detection system? 5 years, 10 years, 20 years?
Manufacturing defects happen. That's why vehicles come with a warranty. That is why owners have the option to purchase extended warranties.
Many like to roll the dice but then like to rant about the manufacturer when the manufacturer doesn't want to pay for out of warranty repairs.
As I said, I do not understand that mindset. Of course it always seems to be about money. My son sees this on a daily basis. Once out of warranty repair estimates reach a certain dollar amount all of a sudden owners start looking for someone else to pay for the repairs.
Let's not forget about campaigns. Many forums (this one included) have people with inside information who post those in special places for all to see. Unfortunately, our first 'insider' left the forum a few years ago. He was the one who started the ball rolling here and was very quick to post to a list he created.
p.s. Even most campaigns (if not all) have an "expiration date." The only thing with any longevity is a recall.
Thanks for that, but the information has already been posted in various replies here and in the "Recall / Campaign / Special Policy Master List Thread."
This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
