First, it's great to see such an active forum for a new domestic vehicle. This bodes well for the Acadia's success. Most domestic models can be on sale for years without generating a forum as active as this one.
Seeing how active this forum is, I hope people here can help out. In late 2005 I started conducting my own reliability research because what's out there today isn't very good. I'm reporting absolute stats like "times in the shop" that will make the differences between cars much clearer. Relative ratings obscure too much--how large is the difference between "better than average" and "worse than average"? I’ll also be updating results four times a year.
I'm very grateful that the admin of this forum sees the value in this research, and has been very helpful.
Participants report repairs the month after they occur on a one-page survey. When there are no repairs, they simply report an approximate odometer reading four times a year, at the end of each quarter.
To encourage participation, panel members receive full access to the results free of charge.
Update: TrueDelta now has a separate results page for each model that includes the scores of competitors for easy comparisons. The one for the GMC Acadia:
We have updated results for the Acadia and the other Lambdas based on owner experiences through the end of June. In terms of successful repair trips per 100 cars per year:
2009: 34
2008: 76
2007: 80
The 2009 is better than average so far, while the others are about average. The 2008 was also better than average a year ago, so it remains to be seen whether or not the 2009s will go down the same path.
A big thanks to this forum and everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in November and February. The more owners participate, the better the information we can provide.
We have updated results for the Acdia and the other Lambdas based on owner experiences through the end of September. In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:
2009: 34
2008: 76
2007: 80
The 2009 is better than average so far, while the others are about average. The 2008 was also better than average a year ago, so it remains to be seen whether or not the 2009s will go down the same path.
We've also introduced two new statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds," to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop.
With the Lambdas the percentage with no repairs is about 44 for the 2007, 57 for the 2008, and 77 for the 2009, and while the percentage of lemons is about 5 for the 2007 and 2008 and less than one for the 2009.
A big thanks, once again, to this forum and everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in February and May. The more owners participate, the better the information we can provide.
I read through this when you originally posted the survey and asked us to sign up. I hesitated (and still do today) because the terminology of "successful" is misleading. The results can be read that:
1. Out of 100 cars taken in for repairs, only X number of the cars were repaired to the owner's satisfaction.:
2. Out of 100 cars needing repair, only X number made it into the shop!
3. Out of 100 survey respondents, only X had to go to the repair shop.
4. Out of 100 cars taken in for repair, only X number of owners have any clue as to whether or not the repair was done properly.
I hope now that you understand how this can be read in several ways. I believe you and your department need to work on clarifying what the data are supposed to mean when someone gets onto your site.
I've been removing "successful" from these posts because it does confuse people. Seems I missed it here.
You can split hairs every which way if you want to, no way around that. In the majority of cases, though, when something breaks under warranty the owner knows it, takes the car to the dealer, and can tell whether or not the dealer fixed it.
I don't include unsuccessful repairs because I don't know if the fault is with the car, the dealer, or the owner being extremely picky, and I only want to measure the car.
We have updated results for the Acadia and the other Lambdas based on owner experiences through December 31, 2009. In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:
2009: 43
2008: 76
2007: 91
The 2008 and 2009 are about average, while the 2007 has declined a bit and is now again worse than average.
We have two additional statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds," to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop.
With the Lambdas the percentage with no repairs is about 40 for the 2007, 53 for the 2008, and 74 for the 2009, and while the percentage of lemons is about 3 for the 2007, 5 for the 2008, and less than one for the 2009.

Those numbers seem to be inline as the 07's get older they are starting to have more issues than the rest of the model years. 91/100 cars for the 07 makes me :'( because my 07 needs a trip to the dealer for an oil leak.
The other thing we might be seeing with the 2007s is a blip at the end of the warranty period. I see this with some models, where owners get things they've been living with taken care of just before the warranty expires.

Great observation, mk! :thumb: I would like to see a breakdown of driveability issues compared with trim problems and A/V issues. Driveability has much more to do with overall reliability than getting a liftgate strut replaced or having a disk player swapped, etc.
I bought a pre-owned Acadia; are you interested in my participation or is this for owners who bought new?
If I participate do you want the repairs the dealer had to make for the certification inspection, (some are being done post-purchase due to parts on order) or only for new issues encountered?
On the repairs, these are in a gray area. Which repairs were performed? Did you notice the problems yourself, or were they discovered by the mechanic? Most likely they should be reported.

The problems are what we found during the test drive, so afterwards I reported to the salesman some things we noticed. When we decided to buy the Acadia, I asked for these issues to be resolved as a condition of sale and had it put on the contract. There was a click in the steering column when turning the wheel a half-turn or so; not loud enough to hear when the radio or hvac was on, but still something I noticed. I also thought the Acadia needed new rear shocks with the ride being bouncy with 2 passengers in the second row. Mr. Goodwrench found a leaky right rear shock and replaced it, and they replaced the steering column, all under warranty. I'll post these on the site for the stats.

When we say "worse than average," that means worse than average for the model year. So the 2007s and 2008s aren't aging well, and the 2009 might be following them. Look at earlier results and you'll see that recent model years have started out well, then gotten worse over time.
Really!! Then, you must define what is a 'repair.' Is it something broken from a situation that was caused by the customer? Or, was it a true failure of parts in the vehicle? That remains about as clear as mud!
