Are the 2011 Acadia crossbars adjustable?

I can't seem to find any answers on whether the factory installed crossbars on the 2011 Acadia can be adjusted fore and aft on the factory rails or if they are stationary. I have an older Thule Evolution rocket box that I would like to use on this vehicle, but the distance between the crossbars as they were factory installed on the rails is greater than the max spread on the rocket box. Although I've removed the crossbars and tinkered with them, and it seems to me that they are stationary, why would GMC do this as it severely limits the accessories that will fit on the vehicle? I'm hoping that I'm just missing something. Any information is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Im pretty sure they are adjustable.
I have a Traverse. And the crossbars on the traverse are adjustable. You just need to have the security torx wrench (sometimes dealers forget to give it to the customer when the cross bars are installed.)

Re: Are the 2011 Acadia crossbars adjustable?

on the traverse- the screws are security torx screws. with a little nub in the center- so you cant use a normal torx screwdriver.
heres a screw- the tool- and the sliders (that you have to loosen the screws to allow it to move.)
the slider has teeth that hold on to the rails once you screw it down
the Acadia- I imagine is similar in allowing it to move fore and aft...

Re: Are the 2011 Acadia crossbars adjustable?

I have a 2010 Outlook that I think uses the same rack. It does use Torx, but not the security Torx.

I think they are adjustable, but not infinitely so. There is a 'front' and 'back' bar (the back, I think, is shorter to match how the rails get closer together toward the rear) and there is a spot or two where you cannot place the bar because of the design of the rails. The bars have some slop in the length so they can be moved front to back.

I think there's an installation PDF posted here somewhere, just make sure it's for the '10 and up as the '07-'09 use a different rack.

Thanks to everyone for the help...especially the pictures. I was able to move the rear crossbar forward and the rocket box is now installed. Thanks again!

Re: Are the 2011 Acadia crossbars adjustable?

After reading what rbarrios said I called our dealership and asked for my torx wrench, service manager said it wasnt included but I could bring it in for an adjustment. So I checked ebay and saw lots of choices for sets about $5 and up. About $11 with delivery charges.

2011 SLT2, summit white, 8 passenger, hit the road package.

Re: Are the 2011 Acadia crossbars adjustable?

the pics above are for a Traverse...

for others---
so the Acadia also comes with a security TORX bit wrench?..

and they told you that it doesnt come with it?

If the Acadia is like the Traverse..
the crossrails are DEALER installed when new and not factory.
The crossrails come in a box with all the hardware to install.
Including the wrench.

Re: Are the 2011 Acadia crossbars adjustable?

I never purchased the cross rails but it was in fact a dealer installed option back in 08. But how absurd that the cross rails don't come with the roof rack anyway. You blow $40K - $50K on a CUV wth a roof rack and they then want to ding you for an additional $200

Re: Are the 2011 Acadia crossbars adjustable?

this is interesting...
But they may have a $$ reason to do it...
My opinion---
Few yrs ago during the SUV craze--all SUVs came with crossbars and hitches.
The crossbars- in cases- added noise- and lowered MPG a little....
the hitch- added weight- and cost. minimal---- but both of these lower MPG. They also add a little to the price of the vehicle.

then you throw in-- the fact that many people NEVER used the hitch or crossbars.

So GM decided to remove them to lower the price of the vehicle. The hitch and cross bars toghether drop the price by $700-800.

They can advertise a lower priced vehicle... makes many happy...
If you really want the cross bars-- you buy them afterwards...
the hitch... well-- I guess they think most will research it........ but thats sort of what I think happened.
