2014 lost AC Freon

Took mine to the dealer with 37,000+ miles last Monday to have them add 2.1lbs in a 3.0lb Freon capacity. They also added a dye to check for leaks. No leaks. Cost: $144.00 including tax. They wouldn't warrant it as a good gesture. I should have asked the Service Manager to call GM, but didn't, to try and get charges waived, being a loyal customer.

Took it back 4 days later to check for leaks. Tech reported None to the Service Consultant. Next scheduled check for leaks is 2 weeks. Temps have been in the high 50's, with no cause to use AC, unless sitting in the sun at the grocery store parking lot, while shopping. If none after 3 weeks, will make the next check in 4 more weeks.

Keep you posted. Should be interesting.

Re: 2014 lost AC Freon

How did you know you needed freon, was the A/C blowing out warm? I just turned in my '14 and had noticed (and it was verified by my wife) that during a couple of early spring 80* days the AC seemed to be blowing warmer air then before. Didn't do anything cause I knew I was turning it in soon. I have a '17 Limited now and have noticed the A/C seems to be warm on this one too, gonna bring it in and have it checked. IIRC you can put a thermometer in the vent and check the temp of the air, I'll have to research what it's supposed to be...good luck!

Isn't this a bit presumptuous??Never expected to put you into the "I'm entitled" crowd. I wouldn't even begin to think about asking for any kind of help unless faced with something MAJOR. A warranty is a warranty, regardless of the product!!

Thank you, thinking I have to go to Harbor Freight anyway, maybe I'll pick up one of those thermal readers, it would probably be more efficient then using my wife's meat thermometer...

Those IR thermometers are very handy to have around the house. Be sure to get one with the laser spot so you can see where it is pointed.

One quick and cheap accuracy test is to fill a glass with ice and water. The temperature should be 32 degrees F. Not sure just what is a good higher temp check.

A 3 weeks ago, we had temps in the 70's for a few days and my wife noticed warm air when punched the AC button. I played with the temp control....etc. and the same. That's when I decided to take it to the dealer last week.

Speloes..........Well......it doesn't hurt to ask and be nice about it. Get either a Yes or a No, since just out of warranty. Doesn't hurt to try. Will I buy from them again....sure.

It might be like, when you go to a restaurant to eat, I ask if they have a veteran discount, Yes or No answer. I know what joints in town have veteran discounts, which are Ihop and Denny's and Culvers[25% discount]. Do I go there much......NO. I go to the family owned Citrus Cafe 3 mornings a week, downtown or $33.00/wk with tip.
Culvers 2X's a week evening for burger, fries, and drink for wife and I.

Re: 2014 lost AC Freon

My '14 Denali started blowing warm air about 2 years into my ownership. The service guy said there was a pinhole in a weld on the rear evaporator, which was then replaced. Not really sure how a pinhole in a weld doesn't show up until two years later, but the evaporator fixed the problem. Probably an isolated incident, but thought I would throw it out there to add to to any confusion.

Re: 2014 lost AC Freon

There is a TSB on the rear evaporators of some 13 and 14 models. Metal particles from the blower motor settle on the aluminum evaporator core and corrode pin holes in it. My rear evaporator and fan motor were replaced earlier this year.

Low Air Conditioning Refrigerant Charge
August 26, 2015

Some 2013-2016 Traverse, Enclave, and Acadia models may have warm air conditioning. A check of the refrigerant level may reveal a very low/empty charge. After performing normal diagnostics, if the source of the refrigerant leak is not found, check for a small refrigerant leak at the rear auxiliary air conditioning evaporator.

Engineering has determined that dust from the blower motor brush on the evaporator may have some copper particles in it, which causes accelerated corrosion to the evaporator. The copper particles are coming from the blower motor during the motor break-in period, so the motor does not need to be replaced.

Remove the rear auxiliary blower control module and insert the GE 50078 Electronic Leak Detector to test for a leak. If a leak is found, replace the rear evaporator.

Also remove the rear blower motor and blow the fan and blower cage (Fig. 9) with compressed air to remove any copper particles and dust that could be redeposited on the new evaporator. This will prevent the possibility of a subsequent failure of the evaporator from the copper dust remaining on the blower fan cage.
